Jackman is not replacing Balfe! <br>Balfe is the most busiest composer at the moment so he isn’t going to get replaced last minute!!!!!Thank you for your replies. On IMDB she is listed.Alright, after re-listening to the score, I've made a few educated guesses of what the additional composers did, based on what we know about the score and their previous work. Note that none of this is confirmed by Hybrid, just my opinion.<br><br>Lorne Balfe: Seems to practically be a co-composer here. I hear a lot of him in this score. It seems he did Invasion (as he's known for contributing trailer music to films he works on) seemingly the suites "Brooding", "Deciphering the Signal", "Battle", and the one we know he cowrote, "Journey Suite". Based on this here's my guess as to what he contributed. <br><br>Soccent Attack - Sounds like his style, probably him arranging AllSpark and Decepticon material. <br><br>Keller's Briefing - Arrangement of "Deciphering the Signal"<br><br>Deciphering the Signal - Obviously another arrangement of "Deciphering the Signal" with Batman Begins-like action at the end.<br><br>Sam's Pink Bike Ride (Part 2) - Sounds like an arrangement of "Brooding" material. <br><br>(Possibly?) Are You LadiesMan217? - Some arrangement of "Brooding" and "Journey Suite" material, although hard to say whether the theme at 1:10 is Steve's or Lorne's. Could be Steve arranging Lorne material, as it sounds more Jablonsky-esque to me. <br><br>Autobots to the Rescue - Could be Steve imitating Batman Begins style, but sounds far too Lorne for me to not consider it a co-written track. <br><br>Sector 7 Chase - Part 1 sounds more Jablonsky than Lorne, but there's no question to me that part 2 has a lot of Balfe in there. <br><br>Where Is My Car? - Batman Begins-like again, probably Lorne solo, or Lorne and Steve<br><br>Decepticons Mobilize (Part 2) - Arrangement of "Brooding"<br><br>Freeway Fight - Battle version of Decepticon theme from "Brooding"<br><br>Stumble Bumble (Part 1) & (Part 2 Alternate) - Arrangement of "Journey Suite", second part not used in the film sounds like Steve & Lorne Combo to me. Film version of part 2 sounds pure Steve to me. <br><br>You're A Soldier Now (Parts 1 & 3) - Lorne being heavily involved in the final battle is known, and Parts 1 and 3 have arrangements of Lorne material. I'm also fairly certain that Lorne wrote the Optimus vs Megatron theme from Part 3 and "Optimus vs Megatron".<br><br>Optimus vs Megatron - Finale of theme introduced in "You're A Soldier Now (Part 3)" as well as the "Journey / AllSpark" theme which could be Lorne's or Steve's. <br><br>Trevor Morris: I can infer from his work on Pirates 2, The Island, and the one track we know he worked on. <br><br>Soldiers Arrive - Not sure why, but I've always assumed this military theme was Morris'.<br><br>Arctic 1897 - Dark theme that reminds me a lot of his work from Pirates 2. <br><br>Scorponok - Known fact that he co-wrote this. <br><br>Hoover Dam - Arrangement of military theme<br><br>Transforming -  Same theme from Arctic 1897<br><br>Sam on the Roof (Part 2) - Arrangement of theme from Scorponok, though could be Steve or Lorne arranging it.<br><br>Optimus vs Megatron - A slight hint to the Military theme when they begin attacking Blackout, and Scorponok theme reprisal, once again could be Steve or Lorne arranging these themes. <br><br>Creeper Suite / A Call to Arms (Unused) - Original music for Optimus' Epilogue, contains arrangement of military theme. <br><br>Jay Flood: Can be inferred from his work on Transformers: The Game, his overall more orchestral writing, and his contributions to Nightmare on Elm Street, Sims 3, and Desperate Housewives. <br><br>Camaro on the Run - Definitely has a TF: The Game sound to it overall. As well as a bit of Thomas Newman-esque music. <br><br>Witwicky (Parts 1-3) - Definitely some of his style here along with Steve's overall Desperate Housewives-esque music. <br><br>Decepticons 2 Suite / Frenzy - The suspenseful strings make me think of Flood's Nightmare on Elm Street work, and the brass writing seems more characteristic of him than Jablonsky to me, though it was still probably a co-written suite. <br><br>Tense Action Suite - Once again reminds me of Flood's Nightmare suspenseful string writing, probably at least co-composed with Jablonsky. <br><br>Clay Duncan - I can guess somewhat based on his contributions to "The Island" but otherwise I don't know much about him so I'm not sure about any of the inferences I'm about the make. <br><br>Angry Camaro - This sort of drone music sounds like it could be him as his contributions were very electronic in The Island.<br><br>Bumblebee vs Barricade - Strange electronics and sounds plus more minimalist writing make me think Duncan. <br><br>Tow Truck Charge - Definitely has The Island's sound. Could be Trevor Morris too. <br><br>TJ Lindgreen: I know so little about his style except he works with Elfman and did additional music for TF: The Game so not much I can say for what he did. <br><br>Belly Shot(?) - The ethereal choir style sounds somewhat like TF: The Game's score and Elfman's choir. <br><br>Not to Hear That(?) - Maybe he composed this motif for Mikaela that also appeared in "Belly Shot". <br><br>Surreal Mikaela(?) - Once again I'm hoping the specific choir sound is part of his style. <br><br>Anything I didn't mention is a track I'm assuming is all Jablonsky. Please note that I'm not trying to take away from Steve's work on this score, and that for most of these track I'm assuming Steve had some involvement in as well, I'm just speculating for fun because I've always wanted to know who did what on this score.LP sadly, but it's also on Spotify.Technical reasons ! lol ;)<br><br>But she was there.

Why is Lorne Balfe not nominated for a Grammy for Ad Astra ?To my understanding, James never worked for Hans or Remote Control. They’re simply friends and have collaborated on a few projects. Well it's completely legit and 100% real, but these 2 cues posted here by Hybrid are missing from the sessions:

40.In The Tunnels (Alternate 2) (1:31)
41.Fort Walton, Kansas (Alternate) (1:40)

With these two cues the sessions would be complete.

This is not entirely legitimate. For one, it's partially made from an older fan edit which crossfades some cues. The real sessions have clean openings and endings to each piece. In addition the "demos", as far as I can tell, are almost all fake (or else Hybrid would have surely added them here). They sound nothing like The Rock score. The only real demos are the I, II and III pieces, which come from an old NGS promo.

Given that a certain someone keeps leaking recording sessions that more often than not end up getting an official release (Wyatt Earp, Jennifer 8, The Ghost and the Darkness, etc.), perhaps a label is going to release this at some point in the future? Who knows; the two occurrences may not be linked at all.

OK, so a thought...

"Opening" and "SEAL Attack" are functionally identical; Hybrid says that Hans originally wrote it for the latter scene and it was then placed over the main titles of the film. However, the former is credited to Hans and NGS, the latter to Hans, HGW and Steven Stern. Presumably, since HGW/Stern aren't credited on "Opening", their contribution to "SEAL Attack" is limited to that first minute, which does indeed have a lot of HGW-ish percussion work to my ears. That leaves the rest of "SEAL Attack" as Hans' work alone, which begs the question: why the heck is NGS credited for "Opening", then, since it's basically identical? Screw it, I'm labeling that a solo Hans cue. Always bugged me that there wasn't at least one on this score. :p

I remember hearing something about NGS not wanting his name in the opening credits since it was a Hans cue playing. So yeah. I think the opening is really just Zimmer and the NGS credit is a formality since it was supposed to be Nick’s score.

Listen to the first demo at NGS demos album of "The Rock". The opening and SEAL Attack have a few notes from original NGS theme. That's why NGS is credited to it.

I was honored, back in 2006, to meet both Nick Glennie-Smith and Harry Gregson-Williams.

I talked with both about The Rock, and here's what they told.

Nick & Hans worked very closely on most of their cues. That's why it's so hard to notice any difference between their own styles (and why they share most of the credits).
Harry worked separately from Nick & Hans. He remembered working on the San Francisco Chase (though we know Don Harper helped at some point in the process), and on "a lot of the action material from the second half of the movie, once the heroes reach Alcatraz".
The credits here tend to prove they were right.

All the Opening Titles / SEAL Attack is a bit complicated. Hans might have written the theme, but it also might be arranged for pictures by Nick Glennie-Smith (plus there's a lot more going on in these tracks than the man theme alone). So, well, I guess the final result still is a collaborative effort.

I've been listening to the complete score for the past few days and I've been reading a lot of comments and articles about it...….And my conclusion is: this IS the greatest action score in film history. I honestly can't think of a better score for a straight-up action movie (though Armageddon, Eraser and Broken Arrow come close).

Most of today's action scores are, frankly, very forgettable and bland. No themes, no actual melodies, no consistency, nada. You can't even compare them to The Rock. The Rock seems to be in a league of its own. Completely untouchable.

Anyway, I would love to hear your thoughts on the matter, folks :) Is there a consensus among MV/RC fans on The Rock? Is it the best? Or I'm alone on this and I'm just an overreacting fan? lol.

One of the greatest action scores for sure. I love The Rock as a movie was well. The 90s had some of the greatest action movie scores ever. You got The Rock, Twister, Face/Off, Armageddon, etc.

But yeah, The Rock is awesome. The opening theme is probably Zimmer's best in the genre. Then you have "The Chase" and "Rockets Away" providing sustained entertainment.

I love this score and I don't want that called into question, but I can't help thinking scores like Crimson Tide and The Peacemaker take the same basic sound and do a better job with it. Those two are mostly Hans, obviously, and they just sound more cohesive. I have nothing against any of the composers who worked on The Rock, but to my ears, the Nick Glennie-Smith stuff sounds obviously different from the Hans Zimmer stuff, and they both sound very different from the Harry Gregson-Williams stuff. And the transitions are a tad jarring at times. I've never seen anyone else post this opinion before, though, so I may be the only one!

Without a doubt. I grew up in the 90s and I was there for all of it. Truly one of the best decades for film music (and for cinema in general). I mean, it's the decade that changed action scores forever. Exactly because of scores like The Rock, Twister, Armageddon, Crimson Tide and The Peacemaker. Granted, Harold Faltermeyer kinda started it all in the mid-80s with his work on Top Gun, Tango and Cash and Beverly Hills Cop 2, but it was Hans and his team who really got the ball rolling. By the way, I'm super happy that Hans and Faltermeyer are teaming up for Top Gun 2. At least according to IMDb....

That's actually very interesting. Never thought of it that way. And you're right. For those who are well aware of the overall MV/RC sound, there is indeed a difference between the Zimmer style and the Glennie-Smith style. However, I think that the two styles blend pretty well in The Rock. The movie itself allows for that. So I would argue that, while watching the actual movie, the two styles work very well together and they complement each other.

But listening to the score alone, yes, I can definitely see where you're coming from. The differences are obvious. Having said that, I still consider it to be a masterpiece of action scoring. And not only action. The emotional bits are great too. JADE is an extremely beautiful and tender track :))

P.S. The Peacemaker is on my personal TOP 5 of the greatest action scores of all time. I can't believe the score is not as popular as The Rock. Same for Eraser, by the way. Watch the movie again on a good sound system and you'll be blown away by the awesome Silvestri score. I really wish those two scores were more popular with the public......

Though there are differences, I think HZ & NGS styles mix together rather well.

Tracks like "Fort Walton", "Goodspeed Tracks Jade" or "Jade" are exceptions for sure. Apart from these, most tracks blend very well, imo.
It's very different from Armageddon for exemple, when team Trevor and team Harry had very different styles (big anthems & guitars VS darker material and more subtle theme developments) and also different sound equipments (I can tell immediately who did what thanks to the sound banks they used). The Rock doesn't suffer from those extreme differences imo.

We fans here listened to those scores for over 20 years and we've learnt how to spot each composer (thanks to this website and all the infos on each track we got over the years). I'm not sure I could have noticed all those details back in 1996, or even 10 years ago.

Nonetheless, The Rock is one of the greatest action scores ever. While more coherent scores like Crimson Tide or The Fan grew on me over the years, The Rock keeps a very special place in my heart.

There was no time to make demos !

Hans started with "Seal Attack" in fact, before it even became the Opening Titles !

Don Harper left the project in the middle of it and had HGW redo most of his things !

HGW told me, back in 2006 during a chat, that Nick and Hans spent most of their time writing cues together for The Rock, while he wrote a lot of action cues from the middle of the movie.
He also remembered working on a "San Francisco Chase" with Don Harper.
The official credits found here by Hybrid confirms all this!

"I ended up writing the main themes, the scene where they all get killed... I think I had a hand in most cues by the end. I can't really remember all that much. Jerry, M. Bay and Nick was just not a good combination. Yes, I seem to remember the Hummel speech, and Harry learned how to write a car chase. Maybe a hundred times :)"

Exactly. The cue I notice immediately is the love theme between Goodspeed and his wife. A slower and more romantic version of Fort Walton, Kansas. I believe would be titled "Marriage"

Played as Goodspeed and his wife talk about getting married in San Francisco just after making love.

@Anon: Recording sessions are not necessarily complete. For example, the Blade recording sessions by Mark Isham are not complete, but are still labelled as such as they contain alternate and unused cues. The alternates and film mixes on this disc have NOT been released before and are NOT on any other version. The name of "recording sessions" is therefore more fitting, to differentiate it from the "expanded" versions out there.
