Sounds like another case of a studio (Disney in this case, Ad Astra being one of those unfortunate projects that will get massacred as part of the 20th Century Fox re-alignment) ignoring the artistic decisions of a real filmmaker. <br><br>Ironic again that the go-to-hack Balfe is taking this on. Does the man have no shame in just becoming a plumber that plugs holes in a monolithic studio's attempts to make any film with a semblance of artistic credibility appear 'commercial'? Guess it suits one's talents and approach to the 'art' of the scoreLorne has nothing to do with interstellarGITS 2.0? I hope not.I have no idea why, filmmusicreporter wrote about it...Seriously? Why they make this decision? They want to sound like Interstellar or what?
LOL, Lorne is co-composing "Ad Astra" with Max Richter, that guy is everywhereI think we can call Ian Brown McCarthy the Anti-MacArthur....lol.... Where MacArthur set out to prove everything was by Zimmer, Ian proves everything is by Lorne. ;)<br><br>Kidding, mostly. Lorne's contributions, especially where he has "producer" credits like on this score, are undeniably underrepresented. I've always considered Lorne a co-composer here, just like on Inception, Sherlock Holmes, and Kung Fu Panda 2-3.Not to nitpick, but even "near co-composer" is downplaying Lorne's role IMO; I've had him listed as co-composer in my personal library for a solid year now.<br><br>On a relate note: man, Hans and Lorne make damn good music together.What I want to know is if the album version of Nixon Defeated is the solo Hans alt or notFeels like there are more Balfe credits on this version than on the album (e.g. Status Suite, solo Hans on the album, Hans/LB here). In fact I'd go so far as to label him a near co-composer here, just like Inception and Sherlock Holmes.
Any word on where this can be found, or if it actually exists? H-Z (here) is the only place any of these tracks (let alone mention of a complete version of this score) can be found.Why you haven't update about David Buckley with Angel Has Fallen score yet?Yep, fun (if slight) score to a very fun movie. "Get it On" is a great action cue.It was also one of the first HG-W's scores I ever listened to (way back when!), so maybe it's just nostalgia talking. <br>But it's worth a listen at least.It's a shame no one talks about this score. <br><br>It's a great listen if you love heavily percussive music! <br><br>Not a highlight in HG-W's carreer by any means, but it's a fun ride, and has some neat unique sounding stuff courtesy of Heitor Pereira, as well as plenty of goold ol' MV style synth/orchestra pounding!
He returns to the hitman's bodyguard part 2I was honored, back in 2006, to meet both Nick Glennie-Smith and Harry Gregson-Williams.<br><br>I talked with both about The Rock, and here's what they told.<br><br>Nick & Hans worked very closely on most of their cues. That's why it's so hard to notice any difference between their own styles (and why they share most of the credits).<br>Harry worked separately from Nick & Hans. He remembered working on the San Francisco Chase (though we know Don Harper helped at some point in the process), and on "a lot of the action material from the second half of the movie, once the heroes reach Alcatraz".<br>The credits here tend to prove they were right.<br><br>All the Opening Titles / SEAL Attack is a bit complicated. Hans might have written the theme, but it also might be arranged for pictures by Nick Glennie-Smith (plus there's a lot more going on in these tracks than the man theme alone). So, well, I guess the final result still is a collaborative effort.A brilliant score, no matter what some people might say. Some of the darkest and most beautiful themes by Hans Zimmer were born here, as well as a lot of very exciting and propulsive electronic techniques. <br>Heck, I even like the movie! The score fits like a glove.<br>It helps that I'm a huge Tony Scott fan though.<br><br>Zimmer would even 'steal' from this score quite a bit in some of his later films. The 'Wayne Manor Suite' from TDKR comes to mind, as well as one of the Blade Runner 2049 themes being strangely similar to The Fan's 'Opening Titles' theme, and I'm sure there are other examples.<br><br>I would love for a complete version to be officially released sometime. It's very unlikely, but one can dream...Listen to the first demo at NGS demos album of "The Rock". The opening and SEAL Attack have a few notes from original NGS theme. That's why NGS is credited to it.I remember hearing something about NGS not wanting his name in the opening credits since it was a Hans cue playing. So yeah. I think the opening is really just Zimmer and the NGS credit is a formality since it was supposed to be Nick’s score.

Having heard the whole album a few times and gone through the process of what Wallfisch tried to do with his music for Shazam, this is not only the best DC album in years, it's also powerful enough to sit alongside (or at least close to) Williams's Superman. This is by and large (unless Hans comes back with a game changer for Dark Phoenix), the winning superhero film score of 2019.

It’s excellent in every respect. The orchestrations, mixing, and writing are all fantastic. The album does run a bit long (not a bad thing of course) and there are a lot of action cues piled on top of each other, but with some editing you have 50 minutes of Five-Star material.

While the score itself is great, I think Ben needs to use somebody like Alan Meyerson to mix his scores. I noticed that on almost every single one of his scores since A Cure for Wellness his mixing/recordings have been a bit shit. The mix problem is EXTREMELY prominent in Serenity, The Darkest Minds, Hellboy, Hostile Planet and to a lesser extent, Shazam and Wellness.
His scores are starting to sound too dry and "synthy" for lack of a better word. Listen to the orchestral recordings in Hostile Planet and Serenity, can anyone honestly tell me that they sound good?
I would love nothing better than to get another score from him on the level of Summer in February, Mully or Gamba cause those sound great.

Gotta say I somewhat disagree with the lavish praise here. The main theme is fantastic; the melody itself isn't that memorable, but the quality of the orchestral writing surrounding it is high. Indeed, the orchestrations and textures are of a very high standard throughout. However, far from there being 50 minutes of 5* material, I find that outside the suite presentation, the rest of the score feels messy. It's one of those scores that reacts to what's happening onscreen rather than actively driving it, so there are a ton of changes of direction. I feel like you can sort of tell that the director comes from a horror background because there's a lot of that stop-start quality you get from horror scores in the action music here, and I'm not a fan of that philosophy. I much prefer action music to have a more constant pulse while still developing in a dynamic way to match the scene (my perfect example of that balance being the wedding cue from At World's End).

The staff here don't seem to care too much as of late about adding new stuff from RCP composers that aren't the big names. Jasha and Atli are still missing their latest efforts, and the new release of one of Mancina's old scores ain't here.

That main theme is incredible!

It’s basically a mix of John Williams and Wallfisch, and if the rest of the score is the same quality we might have one of the best scores this year.

I agree. Great stuff. It's nice to hear some fun superhero bombast every once in a while. If the rest of the score is like the cues we've heard, I'll definitely be getting this one.

Does anyone else feel like 2:15-3:00 sounds exactly like Wallfisch’s “flying” music for “Peter Pan”?

Little side note: the minute I heard the song I immediately thought of the main tune from “Islands of Adventure” (Call To Adventure). Great theme if you haven’t had a chance to check it out...

I can't wait for this. After the debacle of JL, The DCEU has got back on track musically with Aquaman serving harmonic and electronic interpolation in spades, and Shazam seems to capitalize on that with a more traditional sound.
