Hmmm, according to Batu's website he worked on the first half of L3 & Millennium FalconLovely score with beautiful themes, atmospheric vocal parts and a nice orchestration.This is a highly underrated album. It's nothing short of a masterpiece, a modern opera. The choir is beautiful, and the choice of gospel for the first track gives it a unique identity, though I'm not sure how well it meshes with the orchestra. It feels a bit off, but will hopefully improve for me on further listens. <br><br>The composition, has to me, elevated Powell to the status of the second best living composer (Williams is still first for now). It's pure orchestral beauty and mastery with variety of texture, color, and style, with seamless tonal transitions. The complexity rivals some of the great works of the past. <br><br>It's strange to me that this is called "choral works". But once they decided to overhaul the film, they pressured him to go that exact direction. Things stayed still for a while (in which he still got paid) before he was finally let go very late into production. So the idea he sorta just left is interesting, so I'm curious to hear what that was about.<br><br>For BW, it seems very likely to me that Marvel simply were unsure about Alexandre's music, so I'm guessing they hired Balfe to do some demos and decided from there. Who knows what the exact timeline is, but I'd wager it'd have to at least be this year if he's been on it a bit. Especially with AD's name having stayed on the posters during it.

Surely there's more original Pirates of the Caribbean themes than just Hans Zimmer, no?! Klaus Badelt and Blake Neely are credited in the others so why aren't they here???

Because they each only wrote one theme and they weren't used in this movie. Almost all of the original themes were Hans' anyway, and those were used, so he's credited.

Yes. Blake's and Klaus' themes are not in this film, certainly. Klaus wrote the underwater march theme in the first film which isn't in this and Blake wrote a short curse theme in the first film which doesn't apply to this either. All the main themes were Hans' on the first.

I'm not saying this to insult David, but it's funny to me that even now, 16 years later, after so many clarifications from HZ and others, people still get confused because of the way POTC 1 got credited. All because Hans had to work on The Last Samurai (which is one of my favorite scores of his, so I guess it was worth the confusion).

Hans was composing The Last Samurai while the first POTC was being made. He had promised Tom Cruise and Edward Zwick (might have even signed a contract) that he would only work on The Last Samurai and no other movies at that time. So while Hans agreed to write the POTC themes for Gore Verbinski, he wasn't allowed to be credited due to his obligations to the Last Samurai. So he wrote a few themes and then handed the score off to Klaus Badelt, who got the "name" credit on the score. But the whole score is really Klaus, Geoff Zanelli, Nick Glennie Smith, Ramin Djawadi, and a few others doing arrangements of the theme that Hans wrote (and Hans writing for a couple scenes incognito, like when Elizabeth first sees the skeleton pirates). Then Klaus did do the dark "Fog Bound/Underwater March" tune, as mentioned.

Oh man, that's a tough question...I haven't listened to Curse of the Black Pearl in a while.... He's credited on almost every track for themes used... "Fog Bound" is the big Klaus Badelt cue from that movie (the real, 5-minute one in the movie is pretty much all Klaus I believe).

But Hans appears almost everywhere in POTC 1. Sometimes it's arrangements of his themes by the other guys, sometimes it's parts of the tunes that he wrote put directly in like he wrote them... The following scenes are pretty much directly Hans, if I remember right (this is the list I'm referencing — but as you can see, Zimmer's name is almost everywhere hans-zimmer . com/index.php?rub=disco&id=1128):

3. Captain Jack Sparrow (Hans wrote the big theme here, as well as the Jack Sparrow stuff at the end)
8. Breaking the Chains (more Jack Sparrow theme...)
17. Boarding the Dauntless (Jack Sparrow theme...)
24. Moonlight Serenade (Zimmer said he wrote this scene like Cinderella walking into a Metallica concert)

Aaaaand a lot of the final fighting music is lifted directly out of the suite Zimmer wrote, so it's 90% him. But once again, his themes as arranged by other people appear everywhere. Hybrid can answer way more about all this than I can.

Father and Son - 9 Years Later....

Both of these are great! Most of the other unreleased material is pretty straightforward reprisals of Jack’s theme(s) and variations on Carina/Salazar.

Also, this confirms that Geoff used the motif for Barbossa from AWE/OST, I guess this is officially his theme now. (It’s in Jack Arrested/Barbossa in Cabin/Kiss The Bride)

It was a motif loosely related to Beckett which ended up getting repurposed for Barbossa in On Stranger Tides and here. To be fair the theme was used in conjunction with him during the Calypso cue. Judging by its placement throughout AWE I think it was meant to be a “betrayal” theme.

I like some of this soundtrack but it's really temp heavy.

The attempt to cover up the Beckett Death theme and the Blackbeard death themes (which itself is just a cover up of the Davy Jones tune) in "Treasure" is embarrassing. It just sounds like they're being played with the wrong notes.

Yeah it's not nearly as bad as On Stranger Tides, but you can definitely smell the temp at times. I especially hate that part of "Treasure". But at least it feels like a narrative and there are times when old material gets used in fresh ways, which is nice. Zanelli did an okay job here but if they ever do a Pirates 6 I would hope that whoever scores it can do so in a way that's not quite as cautious and beholden to the past as these last two scores have been. I don't mean dumping the themes and style entirely, of course not, but a bit more variety would go a long way.

Side note, a bit surprised how few solo Zanelli cues there are, but perhaps I shouldn't be - this is Pirates, after all...

I feel like a big part of that (not just with the music but the films as well) is the studio trying to “play it safe” and stick to the successful formula they had with the OT. When Gore was at the helm you could feel the difference in tone and creativity. This last movie felt like a big budget fan film that completely missed the subtlety of the originals.

Now one BIG problem I have with this score. The mixing. While the music sounds more organic than the previous ones in terms of instrumentation, the sound is incredibly dry and even flat at points. The drums, for example, don’t have the same oomph or strength that you would get from a Hans score. There are even points where it sounds like it was recorded by a smaller orchestra. Not being familiar with Geoff Zanelli’s individual scores I’m not sure if this is a consistent issue with his mixing.

You might be onto something. Pirates doesn't work sounding "organic". It just exposes how simplistic a lot of the musical constructs are. Only At World's End really had some orchestral complexity going on, and they also had Steve Bartek doing orchestrations.

Curse Of The Black Pearl has a frenetic energy to it because it's such a rush job. Dead Man's Chest has a rock and roll vibe carrying it. On Stranger Tides sounds like an idea that was never finished - with the Spanish stuff.

This score is functional and good in places (and far superior to the crappy film it accompanies), but I agree the sound of it is really thin and lacking in punchiness. Even the end credits cue with the Carina theme doesn't really rouse. You get a fairly tepid trumpet flourish but there's no weight carrying what's a fairly basic tune.

I think Hans just has a stronger musical voice. With all the talk about "ghostwriters" etc. it's telling when people who've worked on his scores do their own and they often lack something.
