Completely forgot how good this score is. Nothing new or groundbreaking... but an awesome homage to classic RCP days with a more modern production sound. Such a fun score.
Are you arseholes dumb? This score sounds like the samples got molested by a bunch of alligators.
What the fuck. 20 years ago this would have had an awesome score by a David Arnold or even a Hans Zimmer. Now it sounds like my nephew did it on yuotube, except they have better samples. What the fuck. This was a 150 million film. How could Balfe make it so, so, so, so, interminaly CHEAP.

The answer is the way hollywood producers want the music. First, Pinar Toprak was the chosen one to score the film. After, with the film in a mess, Jerry Bruckheimer came to add more money and Danny Canon to reshot the film. Bruckheimer is a RCP fan, so, he rejected Pinar and Lorne came to score. The product is a score like in the old days of MV. Not bad or epic, just a good and enjoyable score.

Andy - you are stupid
Scorefan- from what I have heard from those connected to the project , the Warner Brothers wanted the score replaced .Many test screenings occurred and the music was an issue .Balfe has always been a reliable composer to bring in and fix scores. From all accounts Balfes score was a massive improvement.
Yes ! Now this is ACTION MUSIC . Not just loud drums or Baaaaaaams!!!

Well, there is a bit of BAAAAM in some tracks, see Lightning Chase, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing in action music if it's not overused. I like this score but the people in this page I think they overreact a little woth every Balfe score. I mean, they're great, but I don't think all of them are the best score of the year. It also looks like most of this people does not listen many score apart from RCP scores.

I couldn't agree with you more JBSO99. I don't know what's up this year because a ton of Balfe fanboys seem to have crawled out of the woodwork. He's having a very solid year but people are acting like every score he puts out is a masterpiece or something, which...nah.

Your right Edmund ..... how dare we take about any other composer apart from Zimmer or John Powell! Thankfully your point of view is in the minority. There is obviously a reason why he is one of the busiest composers . Geostorm isn’t original BUT it’s great music and I like it at least
Edmund Meinerts
2017-10-20 13:57:15
I like it too but I don't understand why this thread is full of slobbering fanboys while nobody is talking about, say, Kingsman 2 which is just as good. I don't want to stop anyone talking about his music but did we really need every day this year for someone to go "oh my god I can't wait for Lorne to release another unreleased cue from Ghost in the Shell"? It doesn't contribute anything meaningful and makes this site look even more like a YouTube comments section than it already does.

I agree, I'm shocked no one is talking about how great Ramin Djawadi's score is for The Mountain Between Us. Much better than this new Lorne Balfe score, I'm mean really, this Geostorm score is just a constant reminder to other scores from RCP from the past. Nothing original here. Only the track May Day is memorable.

How pathietic that it bothers some ,that some of us are excited about another composers music. Get a life people. Balfe has become a great composer this year so give him a break . If you don’t like it , you can find another forum

I do not think anyone here is hurting because another composer besides of the HZ - JP - HGW triad is being well received by the audience. Well, I agree that this behavior in any session regardless of who the composer is, is very uncomfortable. But we have to understand that each an of the RCP guys has its glory days. Balfe is conquering his. The problem is the proportions of compliments. Many people liked PoTc 5 (best RCP score of the year in my opinion, of course), for example, many also hated, the justifications were many, but the discussion was balanced. If you enter on the forum of any score of any composer you find diverse but balanced opinions, what is missing in the forums about Balfe scores is this balance. Nothing against the growth of his popularity or the reception of his scores, only the judgments that seem a little too exaggerated. It's even a little weird.

I'm not saying that I don't like his music, because I really do, but I think there are also a lot of composers this year that have created amazing scores and they don't get the same talk. Let's mention Ramin Djawadi for The Mountain Between Us, Benjamin Wallfisch for A Cure For Wellness and It, and even outside of RCP like Giacchino with his fantastic War for the Planet of the Apes, Beltrami with The Snowman or the recent Ragnarok by Mothersbaugh (well, this does not belong in this page, so I understand why there is no talk about him). And I repeat that I like Balfe, but not everything he does is perfect, and for example this, I don't consider it too original, because it reminds me to a lot of older scores. And for example, from Balfe I think one of the best was Churchill, and that didn't get much talk or praise neither.

Just wondering, why would anyone have an issue with people who go into a Lorne Balfe soundtrack page to rave about the work of Lorne Balfe?
LP
2017-10-20 17:40:33
> Waymann - Ramin did good work on A Mountain Between us. Completely atypical of his recent outputs, and showed more range. It is rooted a bit in his work on Hans' rom-com scores (i.e. The Holiday) and sounds excellent overall.
James
2017-10-20 17:54:00
Anything, @LP. I myself have spent several hours of my life listening Balfe's work and, of course, commenting here.
It's okay to get on a page and say "this is the best score of all ages" or "this is the worst shit I've ever heard", as long as this behavior is restricted to a minority who has make the mistake of making this kind of comment because not listened to many jobs of the same composer or of other composers or who do not respect his efforts to carry out the work.
...
2017-10-20 18:28:30
Everybody is free to love whatever music they want, but I agree that the Balfe praise is a bit over the top. I mean I saw a comment that said that all of Balfe's scores from 2017 were the best of their genre which I think is over the top. I mean nothing against Balfe, he's a very good composer, but I just don't think he deserves all that praise about him being the best.

I'm not upset, nor am I disinterested in Balfe's work. Don't get me wrong. I welcome any and all discussion! But there's a difference between "discussion" and "blind fanboy gushing", and I've seen way more of the latter here this year than the former.

I think we all agree, Lorne Balfe is getting better and better, he's working at the speed of light and handles many different genres. Plus, he seems to be a very cool person. I'm really happy he got there, and I believe he'll be getting some major movies in the next few years (Terminator Genysis, Geostorm & Ghost in the Shell don't count, they were predicted failures undergoing a damage control process).
But anyway, I think his best solo score is still Home.

hybrid created a very good suite from this movie, also because he left out the more uninteresting action stuff. the whole score is not original, but the themes are great because they transport emotions and excitement. the quiter parts are also very nice. im sure the actionmusic is very functional in the movie, but as a stand alone listening experience it is not very convincing. too much electronics which make too much noise. when the themes kick in, it sounds good, but a better mix of orchestra and electronics would have helped. sadly you won't find a second "Burn around the moon" or "Goodbye/Landing" from Armageddon in this score.

2017-10-22 13:11:39
I find all of this extremely strange. Just about two years ago people were almost universally hating on Lorne every time he became attached to a new project. And now? Orgasms everywhere. I mean, I liked Lego Batman as much as the next guy, and I adore Beyond: Two Souls. But such a blind praise for Geostorm, of all scores? It is, in my opinion, pretty mediocre and overall forgettable. Could this be a PR campaign for that piece of shit movie nobody wants to see?

Ian
2017-10-28 21:15:07
I'm with SPECTER - Lorne is undoubtably competent, but man does a lot of his solo stuff sound generic and use extremely similar mannerisms and structure from score to score. Admittedly Zimmer does this too, especially recently, but Zimmer's best scores are among the best scores ever, while Lorne's best scores are simply very good.
Miguel
2017-10-28 22:17:27
I don’t think anyone is comparing Balfe to Zimmer . Zimmer is best in the world but Balfe has many years to improve .also if Balfe wasn’t any good then why does Zimmer still have him help out ?????
Saw the movie yesterday, and it was exciting, just like to see a new king of Armageddon film, nothing like Roland Emmerich 2012 and the day after tomorrow. The score was superb. It has de classic Media Ventures/Remote Control tune, and i hear some references to Trevor Rabin's score like Armageddon, Deep BLue and National Treasure. By the way, not Danny Cannon and Jerry Bruckheimer had credits on the film. Why is that?

Okay. I'm on the Lorne Balfe bandwagon now. I don't care if this movie is trash, this is a great listening experience, which is sometimes difficult to find in a score these days.

Balfe is with all this year. Best tv score of the year: Genius Best movie score of the year: Lego Batman Best action score of the year: Geostorm Best drama score of the year: Churchill And best scifi score: Ghost in the shell 2017 has been a hell of a year for him
I can't help myself, but whenever I hear this score, I feel this little Inception vibe. Is it just me?
Also, my favorite track is "Hong Kong Falling". It's so cool how the action part ends.

Balfe did write a lot on Inception and produced it so that makes sense . Looking forward to the film next week - the soundtrack is very enjoyable and classic

And if we are talking about Giacchino, the entire Jurassic World score- that is a great score that used alot of original themes. It had callbacks to John Williams' contribution but stood on its own very well- especially the suite!
Hybrid, random question.. do you think this music represents a trend of Hollywood wanting more thematic music once again rather than soundscapes? We had some good melodic scores this year like LEGO Batman, Wonder Woman, Pirates 5, TF5, etc.. and then this. And was just wondering if you think we can start expecting this to become the norm once again?
Waymann
2017-10-09 08:52:19
I don't think they are a norm again. It just depends on what's best for the movie. It's not like composers think like hmm let's make a thematic score when the movie doesn't need one.
...
2017-10-09 10:00:51
Composers in general probably find it more rewarding to write melodic thematic music, unless you're someone like Trent Raznor... but whatever is good for the film is the composer's job.

Nah!
1. This is a Bruckheimer movie, just like Potc5. Then it will sound like the old MV scores. 2. Transformers is a Bay movie, which makes it a twin movie to those produced by Brckheimer. Soon...
3. RGW has adopted the old MV sound as their "personal style" for years.
Conclusion: There is nothing new under the sun.

The music tracks so really great and strong melodies . Really loved Balfe's Ghost In the Shell but this beats it . Big epic themes -LOVE IT
Seems like Lorne is posting about The Florida Project on Twitter recently and on IMDb it shows he's the composer. I watched the film in New York Film Festival and it doesn't have a score except at the end scene. So did Lorne write that part for the film? I didn't remember see his name during the end credits but I might miss it.
This is really taking me back to that classic MV sound, albeit with better production. It's like a mix of Armageddon/Transformers with a tiny dash of Mark Mancina.
Sorry but I can't feel it or honestly I hate it I mean the suite. for me the only melody that make me really shaking and full of adrenaline is "seglass Ni Tonday" by Steve jablonsky TF 5. Zimmer this year is inconvenience 😞 at all. May be the blue planet by him soundtrack will change my mind?!!!

thanks for suite hybrid. the music sounds very entertaining and makes me want to see the movie. i love the theme that starts around 3:57. and the theme at the end of the suite sounds a bit like the ALL SPARK theme from Transformers. also great. cant wait for the score.
Well the suite alone is a lot more interesting to me than most Balfe scores, but it still has too many Zimmer vibes to me. It sounds like a combination of Gladiator and MCU scores with a very hard to identify melody.
