The score is already on itunes. This score... so many mixed emotions. Does it work for the film? Heck yeah. Does it improve the film? So much so. Did Hans do what he set out to do? Totally. Is it an award winning masterpiece? Um, not so fast.

Dunkirk, while super effective within the context of the film (I wouldn’t change a thing about it), I must admit, it doesn’t have nearly the same effect as a stand-alone listen. It’s literally the same textures and notes over and over again, just slightly rising and falling in pitch and tempo. Does that make it “award” worthy? I’m not sure. If based solely on the film, you betcha. If based purely on the music itself, I don’t think so. That’s where Interstellar succeeds so far and away over Dunkirk. As a pure listening experience, Interstellar is interesting, multi-layered and emotional. Whereas Dunkirk is just flat, void of any sort of feeling or “actual” music (again, works IN the film). It’s glorified sound FX (save for the end, which, no doubt, is in large part to Ben).

Hmm... I’ve never had a score tear me apart more than this one. I both love it and hate it. Maybe it did it’s job... lol.

Excuse me while I go listen to No Time for Caution yet again.I think most of us agree that he should've won for Interstellar but I think Dunkirk deserves it too. The work Hans and the music department did on this movie is just incredible. Must've been a lot of hard work.
An award is an award, Hans' 2nd Oscar is long overdue so I'd be glad to see him win. But it would be weird to see him win for THAT score, after all the greatnesses of the past 20 years. Same thing with Morricone who won his only Oscar for his very light and insignificant work on Hateful Eight. Good for the man, good for the fans, but doesn't really make sense. But have Oscars ever made sense? :-phaha hybrid :D made my day
Hybrid, yes!wow man, hybrid. this isn't right from you. actually really embarrasing and an absolute no-go from a staff/member of this site to write such a comment. even if it's a joke, this is a shame and sad.I was a bit over the line, I admit. I should have made it clearer that all of that "hottest shit in town" bit was meant purely as a part of my personal opinion regarding his output. I never saw or read any interviews with him.

I also know about his wife, of course... but I guess I'm just too cynical to accept it as an all-encompasing excuse while seeing such massive fanbase clamoring for his new music. I don't know, I admittedly feel a bit bad about what I'm saying myself. I AM an asshole, sure, but only to an extent.

I think that saying "he is writing scores that he feels comfortable with" and "living his life however he wants", albeit understandable, is still ignoring the fact that he is an artist with a fanbase. We are living in a time when film composers are slowly getting a mainstream recognition as a type of musicians comparable to bands or singers. And that creates a certain responsibility towards that fanbase. An artist doesn't have to fulfill it, sure, but he should at the very least acknowledge and address it.

Which brings to mind an image of Hans going on a massive tour whilst giving zero fucks about the CD presentation of his scores, but I digress.

I wouldn't dare giving Powell advices about how to deal with a pain of the loved one's loss. But on the other hand, I strongly believe in artist's responsibility towards the fans.

For example, that's why I would kick everybody saying "GRRM is not your bitch" right in the goddamn nuts. Now I have ONE true reason to want this score to win !

PEACE ! lolI stand corrected. Though it's still possible that the score is a combination of live orchestra and samples, a lot of RCP music does that.
Ds beat me to a few of the points I was going to make, so thanks. :) I'll try to keep this brief, but it won't be.

Macejko, the only part of your statement that I would 100%, strongly, absolutely disagree with is the "pretentious douche" part. When has he ever "acted like the hottest shit in town"? Do we have any record of him actually refusing assignments? I mean, clearly his output has slowed down since 2012, but why do you act like he's doing that because he thinks he's better than everyone else? I don't see that as pretentious. Especially not given what we know about his personal circumstances. For all we know his decision to take on less work was caused by the knowledge that his wife was sick and wanting to spend as much time with her and with their son as he could. You really still want to call him pretentious?

Now, what I do agree with is the impression that Powell is no longer really developing as an artist. He's found his niche and is writing scores that he feels comfortable with, but I haven't been "surprised" by anything he's written since probably 2010 or 2011. Is that a problem? Well, depends on what your priorities are. I don't rate innovation as highly as I do music that speaks to me on an emotional level, that I love listening to and want to hear over and over again. And with scores like Pan and HTTYD2 Powell has definitely provided that, while Hans Zimmer for all of the "pushing the envelope" and "breaking boundaries" he's done (or claimed to have done) in the last 7, 8 years has in the process left behind many of the things that made me love his music in the first place. He's written some fine and certainly interesting scores in those years (and some I never want to hear again), but I'd throw out every single one of them to hear another At World's End or King Arthur, just a big old epic larger-than-life fun time that cares more about entertaining you than trying to musically divide by zero or whatever. But now I'm turning this into a Powell vs. Zimmer argument which was never really my intention. :p

At the same time I can't pretend that it doesn't hurt to see how much Powell has slowed down. I mean his run of form from 2003-2011 is the stuff of legend, 3-4 scores a year in all sorts of different genres, all of it quality stuff. He was pretty much hitting the sweet spot: innovating, developing his style, trying out new things but not sacrificing his voice or the accessibility of his music. If he were to keep up that trajectory for a career spanning several decades he'd be in contention for greatest of all time IMO. Sadly it doesn't look like that's going to happen anymore. I think it's a fair criticism to say he's dropped off, or at the very least leveled out. I just don't think it's fair to call him pretentious for doing so. The man's a human being and he has the right to live his life however he wants. But you know he never said he has nothing to prove. I don't think he even think such a thing, actually he seems like a very humble and nice guy, much like Hans. I just tell you this based on all the great things he did in many genres throughout his career.

I guess he just want to write music he likes and the way he likes it. Many producers/directors want something more restrained for their movies, that's ok, they can get someone else. If you can afford doing what you like for a living, why the hell would you accept jobs you don't like?

And SW isn't about "creativity", it's just about this kind of busy orchestral music with lots of frenetic parts which Powell seems to really like these days.If only every annoying film music fan would be so willing to take his own life as this one...If this nominated for golden globe or even Oscar and win the title I'll kill my self.

This score is nothing compared to interstellar or even to POTC 3.The moment an artist thinks he has "nothing more to prove", he is creatively dead.

Also, thinking that only animation and Star Wars provide a field for any kind of innovation and experimentation is just ludicrous beyond words, Ds. SW especially is the most musically restricted franchise on the planet.
Fair point. Just look at what Balfe did this year, Lego Batman, Churchill, Genius, The Crown, Geostorm... and all are somewhat different in tone. He was on fire this year for sure. Here is another comparison which to me seems more relevant than yours :
Lorne is doing a lot of projects and getting better and better in various styles.
And Ramin is also doing a lot of projects but is far, far behind in terms of styles and creativity. I'm not saying he doesn't evolve, but at this rate he will need 3 lifes to catch up on Balfe's current level.

Powell has nothing to prove, he has already mastered all genres and is now able to write the music he likes most : crazy orchestral pieces where nothing is forbidden. Today, only animated movies allow this style of scores to exist. And also Star Wars :-pEdmund wrong again !!!!!balfe posted some photos of the recording sessions for the crown^ lol. Harsh, but he’s not wrong. Although, I hate to say it, we could say the same for Zimmer in my opinion.I must admit I'm starting to think of Powell as sort of a pretentious douche. All the time he acts like the hottest shit in town, refusing to score basically everything they offer him, and when he finally descends from his golden throne and graces us peasants with a new score for his beloved kiddie animated genre, even then he doesn't handle the majority of the score himself.
This might be a fun score, I'm sure it's gonna be, but I'm also pretty sure that it's going to sound like every other Powell score from the last 6 or so years. The man hides in a cave, doesn't evolve at all and for some mysterious reason he is still revered like a second coming of Jesus Christ. Say anything you will about Lorne Balfe, but at least he is working his ass off and slowly getting better and better.

firasd2017-11-01 12:27:45

Der-Profl reply Replies: 17 || 2017-09-24 01:43:13
Does anyone know how many tracks Lorne will release?

Hybrid Soldier2017-09-24 09:21:51
3 left ! ;)

Evenstar2017-09-25 18:29:44
Will they still be released officially (CD, MP3 or FLAC?) or do we have to stick with the low quality youtube uploads?

Der-Profl2017-09-26 21:47:52
Oh, no! Only 3 left?! :O
What else will my fridays make great again after these last tracks? XD

Der-Profl2017-09-29 02:07:03
Will Lorne release all three tracks today or one last track next week?

Hybrid Soldier2017-09-29 08:35:27
Might be 2 in the end, I'm not totally sure, so it might the last ones today !

Medigo2017-09-29 10:12:02
should have been way more
riot!

Der-Profl2017-09-29 13:35:57
Okay, than I should prepare my Ghost for the last GITS-Friday.
And, yes, Medig, it should have been way more.

Hybrid Soldier2017-09-29 13:38:03
Well it's all he wrote (even if he removed a bunch of very ambient drone cues).

The rest is the other guy who doesn't want his music out... :P

Der-Profl2017-09-29 14:06:51
I don't understand why he won't release his music.

Anonymous2017-09-29 21:22:46
No GitS music today :O

But Hybrid has them... ;-)

Reborn (1:53)
Major Motoko (2:29)

Der-Profl2017-09-30 11:15:33
Hybrid, where are the tracks?

firasd2017-10-01 10:52:57
I got a 15 second sample of Major Motoko.. epic electronic track that didn't get used in the final cut of the movie. Hopefully Lorne Balfe will release it on a GITS Friday in a week or two!

https://twitter.com/gitsost/status/914171769065541632

Hybrid Soldier2017-10-01 11:08:01
He will don't worry about that...

firasd2017-10-01 19:42:35
Cool... this stuff about drones is very interesting because there are no significant drones that I can remember in the movie. This is yet another reason we need a director's cut or deleted scenes...

Hybrid, is it okay if I share the cue sheet on our blog post about potential deleted scenes?

I can't find the track 'Reborn' on Lorne Balfe's YT channel. Has he uploaded it? Or will that be his final release?

Any news of an actual release ?????

Hybrid Soldier reply Replies: 6 || 2017-09-15 23:53:54
If someone is wondering how I organize the album as it arrives, it's neither random nor fully chronological, but the way Lorne built it. It's mostly chronological though... lol

Der-Profl2017-09-15 23:55:27
What do you mean with "the way Lorne built it"? I don't understand.

Hybrid Soldier2017-09-15 23:57:58
The way he built his album... He sometimes mixed a few very short cues together and wants it in that order... :)

Der-Profl2017-09-16 00:00:38
Okay. And why doesn't he upload the tracks in the order he want?

Hybrid Soldier2017-09-16 00:01:51
To make every week interesting !

Der-Profl2017-09-16 00:06:16
Okay, that's totally cooler than everything I had in mind. Chronological order is good and so, but the suprprise every friday is the thing that made every friday.

ZawiszaTheBlack2017-10-01 19:14:51
Hey Hybrid!

Could you please atleast tell us what would be the chronological order?

Drunkenmunkey reply Replies: 1 || 2017-09-27 02:09:07
Hybrid...

This is off topic since there isn't one for it yet, but have you heard if Lorne and/or Hans are back to Call of Duty for World War 2? I understand if you cant confirm it.

Thank you!

Bondo2017-09-08 14:40:43
Wow, you're right! And come to think of it, CNN sure has been reporting a lot of news lately....

Mike2017-09-08 15:16:09
Probably cause he has done he most amount of work this year ? Genius was his best

fs2017-09-08 17:55:04
After all that praise i was dissappointed about the music when i just recently watched the movie. Never really noticed the music, no theme... nothing. If someone compares that to Tron Legacy then the Tron score was way better than this (they seem to be similiar so i think its ok to use Tron for comparison). Is it praised because its unreleased ?

mpolonest123 2017-09-08 20:16:25
@fs I honestly feel the same. Outside of the shelling sequence and finale cues I honestly can't remember anything themewise. The electronic music is well done (especially in context) but just like the film it was pretty forgettable to me.

Marcus2017-09-08 21:42:30
Balfe's score was fantastic . Just because it didn't have big melodies all over it doesn't matter . The film was ok but Balfe's score was unique.

James2017-09-08 22:17:57
Effective in the context and out ò f it, but not unique.

firasd2017-09-09 00:07:34
There are definitely themes--or at least one theme, played throughout the score with different tempos and instruments.

fs2017-09-09 18:12:03
It is not bad but just nothing special or fantastic. After reading many comments here (Balfes best work etc) i really cared for the music while watching it. But i dont see/hear any "idea" behind that score. It is solid of course and supports the movie. It is the same like Balfes Terminator score, it works but nothing to rememeber outside from the movie.

Adam2017-09-10 17:47:04
The score is really amazing . It suited the visuals and tells a beautiful story . Shame the film did not do better because I enjoyed . Defiantly would like the soundtrack released

Hybrid Soldier2017-08-19 12:49:21
I think he'll release all he can... ;)

Micheal2017-08-19 18:14:47
I asked Balfe and he is releasing the whole soundtrack

Anonymous2017-08-19 23:50:55
All of his cues isn't the whole soundtrack though. It's not like he'll be releasing Clint Mansell's material :(

Michael2017-08-20 00:38:00
Incorrect . Only a hand full of cues were Mansells . Check your facts ...... or ask Balfe himself ?

Hybrid Soldier2017-08-20 01:11:55
Yeah not that much was kept from him...

David2017-08-20 02:24:26
Oops that was me as Anonymous.

I was just doing the math! I don't know all the details about the score, so don't pick on me :P

Hybrid, do you know exactly what material from the film is Clint Mansell? I'll bet you could find out!

Hybrid Soldier2017-08-20 09:29:06
Err... if you had just scrolled down... lol

David2017-08-20 18:23:05
Woopsie :/

See I knew you'd know! :P

firasd2017-08-22 02:33:50
I suspect that the music from the Clint Mansell sessions that ended up getting used in the soundtrack is too intertwined with the final score to separate the cues between the two composers' teams. Check out "The Leap" from Kevin Kiner (it's on his website and also on Youtube), a version of that is in the final score.

In other words, I don't think there are easily separable "Clint Mansell cues" and "Lorne Balfe cues". There is just one final score.

firasd2017-08-22 02:45:43
Also (to answer the question at the start of this thread) the cover art uses a portion of an unofficial poster by Ruiz Burgos

It's up to Clint and I don't think he's inclined to release his score at present because Clint was pretty sore that some of his music was replaced. (Right information. I'm so sorry.)

Hybrid Soldier2017-08-06 16:16:32
Who wouldn't be ?

The score was finished and ready for release and then... change of plans lol...

noregaaaa2017-08-06 20:53:25
Mansell doesn't want.

Zimmer's old student2017-08-06 21:46:33
Hybrid Soldier, please stop dropping "lol" every time you post here. I don't know how old are you, but not everything is 'lol' in this world. This situation in particular, there's nothing funny about it. P.S. You're not the only one with inside info and access to some of the composers. Have some respect and take these things seriously. Thank you.

Hybrid Soldier2017-08-06 22:17:48
I drop whatever I want, if my way of writing or my sarcastic cynical humor bothers you, then too bad for you, "old student".

I think I'm making enough promotion for free for composers around here and respect all guys I'm in touch with. Although, yes, no one found the cure to cancer here, it's film music, it's not a big deal "in this world", people get fired all the time, I will not act like it's a matter of life & death and cry for it. "lol" ;)

Felix2017-08-06 22:28:58
Right answer Hybrid!!

James2017-08-07 00:21:07
Do you guys get any help from Zimmer's company?

Hybrid Soldier2017-08-07 00:29:50
Nope.

It's been there for 16 years (I've been there for 9), but nope.

James2017-08-07 01:24:03
I've never imagined. I always thought he was treated as the official website (even though it was a result of the fans' effort).

ATonas2017-08-07 05:47:52
Apparently Clint does not want the score released . Even though it was a total re write , Balfe still used Mancells main theme. This is why he doesnt want it released . Good on Balfe for released the score . Great job

MThomson 2017-08-07 06:13:18
Has there ever been such a demand for a soundtrack that has. It been released ?
The score was better than the film . Is Balfe involved with Bladerunner . If so then it would be great if it sounded like Ghost in the Shell.

Gary2017-08-07 08:24:38
There are over 3000 people wanting a release . That is impressive

Olive2017-08-07 15:13:17
Was it a total rewrite?

Hybrid Soldier2017-08-07 17:31:29
James, it sort of is.

I mean Hans trusts us so we sort of have carte blanche (and if Remote isn't happy with something, they just tell me), but technically they don't own nor participate in it and I could ignore whatever they would want me to remove (which of course I don't, it's in the interest of... nobody) !

Evenstar2017-08-07 22:19:16
@ATonas How do you know this? Was there an interview you can refeer to?

noregaaaa2017-08-07 23:56:38
It's up to Clint and I don't think he's inclined to release his score at present. Maybe in time when the dust has settled. It's a great shame I know because it's a wonder score.

Micheal2017-08-08 15:46:45
Why is it up to Clint ? From all accounts Balfe replaced nearly the whole score ?

UKfimmguy2017-08-08 16:30:03
Any idea if we will get better quality links that the YouTube ones ?

noregaaaa2017-08-08 23:25:42
@Michael All score? We don't know this. Known, Mansell is nervous because him score replaced from studio/director.

@HybridSoldier

Yes, I understand. But it would not be a bad attitude on their part to provide full support for the site.

;)

@evenstar

Is not said in any interview. It's just an assumption of this. He made no mention of the score in all his interviews and even his Twitter account. He ignores the existence of the score.

James2017-08-09 00:23:09
Thanks for cuesheet

noregaaaa2017-08-09 01:21:03
@Hybrid Soldier Thanks for track list.

firasd2017-08-09 20:39:44
Guys I would ask that nobody make confident proclamations about what Clint Mansell is thinking if you don't have genuine information. As the person who started the petition the only information I can confirm is that there are contractual issues related to the fact that both composers were involved. But I got this confirmed info only a couple days ago after 4 months of all of us trying to figure out what's going on. I'm not against speculation but let's not pass off speculation as authoritative statements. Thanks!

mpolonest123 2017-08-10 01:29:13
@Hybrid I'm sure most of the RCP composers know about the "music leaks" (how else would they get out there) but I'm actually pretty curious; Does HZ himself know about these recording sessions popping up? Does he even care? Lol

Evenstar2017-08-12 15:38:00
Clint seems to be a crybaby...

noregaaaa2017-08-14 11:09:31
@Evenstar Maybe (:

Lorenzo2017-08-14 22:55:53
Most amazing soundtrack in a long time and better than the film.

badbu2017-08-15 07:53:47
there is a score in this movie? not noticed...

you are all amazing! thank you for making this happen

Otto reply Replies: 0 || 2017-08-14 08:38:09
Really loving Balfe releasing the score every week . So crazy they will not release it because it is one of the best soundtracks this year . A classical Bladerunner . Well done

There will be a digital release:

JBSO992017-08-07 12:22:59
YES!!!
Finally this amazing score will get released!
Thanks to Lorne Balfe for making this possible.

Lynk2017-08-08 06:06:23
One can only hope they are doing it properly. I am concerned that given Mansell's likely discontent, as described by a few posters in this thread, there may be some incentives to cut each and every references of his tunes from the prospective album. That won't be nice.

MrZimmerFan2017-08-08 13:45:20
More than a confirmation is more like a wish

Mike782017-08-08 15:43:36
Balfe's post on YouTube sound really cool and he said on twitter every Friday he is uploading tracks

Ahmad reply Replies: 9 || 2017-08-05 02:52:21
Lorne posted two tracks on Youtube.

Andrew2017-08-05 04:42:16
Finally !!! I've been waiting for this for ages .

JBSO992017-08-05 11:21:54
I hope this means that an official album release is coming.
There is still hope!

...2017-08-05 12:30:01
I doubt... He is just sharing some of his music, that doesn´t mean, that they will release it, even if we all would love that :/

meta2017-08-05 13:01:36
if you look on youtube someone has already pretty much ripped the score from the film...

Andres2017-08-05 19:49:21
It seems Balfe is releasing the soundtrack on YouTube . At least then we get to listen to

James2017-08-05 22:12:05
It's sad. His work deserves better treatment. Even a digital release.
Not just for him, but for Mansell too.

Steve2017-08-05 23:08:23
"OST teaser" sounds to me like it's going to be released, and this is just a teaser...

Mike782017-08-06 05:23:02
This is great Balfe is releasing the music because it has been too long waiting for this . Is it true Balfe is score producer for Blade Runner ? If so it will be hard to beat the Ghost score !

James2017-08-06 16:53:48
Hans did the Batman and Balfe the now will do the Robin.

noregaaaa reply Replies: 0 || 2017-08-05 09:40:57
The OST is coming.

antovolk reply Replies: 7 || 2017-06-04 14:43:12
Kevin Kiner posted two cues from the Mansell sessions:
kevinkiner.com/music

antovolk2017-06-04 14:44:04
The Leap and Don't Send a Rabbit to Kill a Fox. The Leap is specifically interesting to compare with the film version.

Michael Poleschuck2017-06-04 15:25:40
But that means that Kiner also write additional music for this, or not? Interesting and strange story with this soundtrack.

JBSO992017-06-04 16:28:55
So The Leap is not the film version? That's one of the cues Lorne rewrote I suppose. They're very good. I hope the story around this score slowly gets clearly explained

Simon2017-06-04 16:50:50
I asked Balfe about cues from Kiner and they were never used in the film. Hope there is an actual album

Edmund Meinerts2017-06-04 22:09:00
So now Kiner was involved with this score as well? The plot thickens...

antovolk2017-06-06 16:54:29
@Michael Poleschuck @Edmund Meinerts
Per the film's end credits, Kiner wrote additional music for the Mansell sessions.

@JBSO99
Correct. The film version of The Leap can be heard in the clips released online

Haha, I love how this has a fan rating even though it doesn't actually exist.

JBSO992017-06-05 16:03:13
Well, it exists the score in the movie so maybe this people voted based on the movie. Or maybe the voted just because, why not?

Anonymous2017-06-05 21:50:59
So many votes lol

Petro2017-06-06 00:05:30
I voted because the score was amazing . I watched the film 3 times and would love an actual album . Best score I have bought this year

antovolk reply Replies: 3 || 2017-05-12 15:29:28
....any updates?

Randy Watson2017-05-12 18:10:48
According to one of the producers of La La Land Records, it won't be released

Ahmad2017-05-13 00:10:36
What a sh*t decision they made, it is bound to leak someday, and they'll regret not releasing it officially.

Zac2017-05-17 18:12:38
Won't be released from La La Land Records, or won't be released at all? Lorne is still actively retweeting the GITSOST campaign on Twitter...

... reply Replies: 8 || 2017-04-27 22:13:13
you added credits! finnaly we can see at least who was working on it, hopefully there will be release

JBSO992017-04-28 15:30:54
I hope so, but why Clint Mansell is not in here? And now Lorne appears as composer and not co-composer. Does that means that they will release only the Lorne score parts or something like that?

...2017-04-28 15:56:45
Clint is not part of Remote Control Productions, so that´s why he in not listed here

JBSO992017-04-30 09:34:29
I know that he is not part of RPC, but what about James Newton Howard. As far as I know he's not part of RCP. Did he was part of it during some time? Because you can see his collaborations with Zimmer in The Dark Knight and some of his other score but 2010 is the last year when a score from him appears in here.

...2017-04-30 10:09:02
Yes he was part of RCP... And it looks like to me that Trevor Morris is not part of RCP too

Hybrid Soldier2017-04-30 10:29:17
James isn't, but his studio is just 2 blocks away from RCP...

Michael Poleschuck2017-04-30 10:45:08
Cool!

JBSO992017-05-02 13:08:27
Oh, thanks for the info Hybrid. That's nice!

Zac2017-05-04 06:30:16
Does anybody have any updates on the status of this? The petition has garnered a lot of signatures and attention by now...
