Really liked this score, and the movie wasn't as bad as people claim as well... Benjamin Wallfisch does some very nice stuff, his horror scores are always on point like It 1 & 2, Annabelle: Creation, A Cure for Wellness...

I know he's gonna deliver it with Mortal Kombat even if the movie isn't that good. But kind of a bummer that his next scheduled project comes out in 2021 LOL'Cause maybe the expected all the cues from the sessionsI like this music! The #balfeness !!!! Has outdone himself on Bad Boys for Life.
A nod to the last but brought it up to date.
This and 6 Underground has blown me away with Balfe’s musici can't understand, when someone is saying "it REMINDS of mw2" when those mentioned cues are completely re-used 1:1. it's identical, sometimes layered with mancinas themes. it doesn't just remind you of mw2 when lorne seriously uses the identical tracks or parts from mw2 -_-

@bayhem: then listen to it. i'm not a fan of lorne, but his work there is real fun and some real good action cues. with the themes of Zimmer, it's crazy that it's just a game. one of or maybe THE best work of lorne!
Colleague of mine (a film score fan too) asked me which new Balfe score is better in my opinion - Bad Boys for Life or 6 Underground?

Honestly - and as much as I praised BB3 - I couldn't decide......

Both movies have a lot of songs, which is something I don't like. Look at Transformers. There are songs too but they don't overshadow the score. The score is still the star and that's why people flood Steve's Twitter with praise. Day after day.

But sadly for Lorne, his recent work in film WAS indeed overshadowed by the random songs. If they didn't rely on songs so much, I'm sure that 6 Underground would've been the crown jewel for Lorne. It's a big, big movie that begs for equally big and memorable score (though we can't really expect Transformners-syze score).

At the end of the day, Lorne did good on 6 Underground but it was just a small sign of what COULD have been.....Some of the action bits, yeah......This right here is my single biggest issue with Balfe as a composer. And with the recording sessions clips he posts it is truly a mystery. Tinfoil hat on I'd say he skimps on the budget and hires those musicians just for a couple hours to shoot those clips for PR and the actual score is all synth but that's a baseless claim of course lol...
....................

It's bigger than that.....

After all, this is a Bruckheimer production. His movies established Hans and the entire MV/RC sound. His movies are known for their awesome scores. Scores that are populrar with the ordinary viewers as well. But 2008 onward, things changed.....Back in the 90's and early 2000's every single Bruckheimer film had a spectacular score. Powerful, melodic themes, cues that stayed with you, scores that attracted the attention of the average Joe.

Nowadays tho, we don't have that. Hell, when was the last time a (newer) action score from MV/RC-related composer was praised the way 'The Rock' was praised?

Lorne's Mission Impossible? No. Not even close.

Personally, I like what Lorne did with BB3, especially with the emotional cues. But put it next to Mancina's work. I mean it's not even a contest. The Mancina score is one memorable, melodic track after another. There's not a single boring track. Every track is a banger.

But the newer scores? They have two or three tracks that are good and everything else is.......utterly forgettable.

I blame it on the lack of themes. Orchestra or not, more scores need to have actual themes. Some cues sound like Speed 2Guess I'm the only person around here who hasn't listened to the Modern Warfare 2 score. So I can't really have an opinion on this matter..... lol

Just listen to the track « Arena battle » and let me knowThe clips are on his Facebook page.2/5 stars? Why are people hating on this?Me too
Excited!!!God’s gun theme reminds me of part of “River Mission” from Battlefield 2: Modern Combat OST. I think Lorne was an additional composer on that score aswell (excellent OST btw)"It's good shit lieutenant" The principle is based on Thomas Newman's Bond. "Take back what's ours" and "the truth" is Ad astrahonnestly, I do get why people refer to MW2, but to be honest, it's not the same. With the amount of time I heard that score, I can say that it uses the same drums, and a pattern that is quite similar to the one used in MW2, but it is not a copy/paste. It's no different to me than Junkie XL re-using the same pattern of drum in all of his recent scores since Mad Max. When it comes from the same composer, I guess it's normal to have works that parts that similar from a score to another. Just think of John Murphy who re-use his powerful theme from Sunshine in a lot of his scores (28 weeks later, kick-ass, etc).

Actually I'm quite glad he re-used the themes from Mancina as that was, to me at least, a big miss for BB2 even though Rabin and Jablonsky did a great job. It's like doing a James Bond movie without the Bond theme. It might be good, but it miss the little something that gel everything together. ;) I really like what Lorne did on this one. Even though he re-used the theme, he made them his own, in a similar way he did with MI Fallout, while sometime paying homage to the original ones. ;) My 2 cents.

Does anyone know what tracks Chas Smith played on?

The style of instrumentation and orchestration reminds me a bit of Thomas Bergersen from Two Steps From Hell.

I think it has been since Pirates Worlds End that there was a RCP score with such excessive instrumentation. I love it. I think Lorne can handle a Pirates score on his own he wants.

Edmund Meinerts2017-02-07 22:27:07
Bergersen, really? I've listened to pretty much every piece of music he has ever composed and I can't say I particularly hear a connection. This score sounds like Balfe's usual animation techniques crossed with an over-the-top version of the Zimmer/Nolan Batman scores. It's certainly a lot of fun, whatever it sounds like!

Usually I am not into animation movie music because they are way too cheerful happy adventure style. But this one is amaaaaaaazing. I can hear a lot of stuff from other RCP scores but I don't mind.

This is really well orchestrated and badass. Lorne his best score.

I can only hope they will do a "superman lego movie" and he can do the score too

MusicWi2017-02-05 19:02:14
Totally agree . It great to get themes back again with super heroes !
10/10

Order of amazing tracks :

1) Battle Royals - amazing theme and orchestration
2) The Babs Signal - great theme . Exactly how superhero movies should have a theme .
3) Chaoes in Gotham - totally crazy !
4) A Long Farewell

The rest : just as good but theses are amazing .

Just downloaded the album . Already listened to it three times .
It's excellent . Lorns best score yet . Fun and series .

Brent2017-02-03 07:06:47
I absolutely love this score! Perhaps Lorne's best. Though, at the same time, I'm a little annoyed that Junkie's Mad Max descending action pattern keeps showing up at every possible moment.

Ando42017-02-03 18:11:21
I thought that to but then that line is also in Megamind ! So not really junkies!

Hybrid Soldier2017-02-03 19:48:42
Yeah that's funny I asked if there was Mad Max temp but it was rather Megamind ! ;)

The Pale King2017-02-03 20:56:56
That descending action theme is a bit annoying, but I'll forgive it for just how much fun this score is; a real treat.

Basically sounds like putting the score(s) for the Lego Movie, Batman '66, and Batman '89 / TAS in a blender, with a lot of fun, unexpcted surprises along the way.

Not to be that guy, but after the muddled disappointing Batman stuff in BvS, hats off to Lorne for creating something that sounds so quintessentially Batman.

Oh, and the Robin cue / theme might be one of my favorites in a long time :)

Just saw a screening of the film . Defiantly Lorne's best score yet .its nothing like I've heard in an animation . Can't wait for the album now and great songs

Mike2017-01-27 20:43:25
You've gotta be kidding me! The "deshi deshi basara" percussion again? :P Lorne already used it in 13 Hours.

Musiz2017-01-27 21:37:39
This is crazy !!! Brilliant . feels in the world of Superheroes and Batman
But fun . Great start to the year for amazing soundtracks

David2017-01-28 04:51:14

There seems to be a vinyl of just the score being released in May

jrej35552017-01-27 17:34:26
Hey, no dissin' on "Man in the Mirror!" ;)

Anonymous2017-01-27 18:17:41
@jrej3555,

I sampled it last night. It's not what you think it is. It's it's own song. And it sucks.

mpolonest123 reply Replies: 2 || 2017-01-27 01:41:28
The samples for this sound really cool, and it's great seeing Lorne Balfe tackle it given his history with Batman.

Tomas362017-01-27 03:38:31
This is Balfes best score yet ! So many colors . Bravo

Seeing as Lorne worked on all three movies of the TDK trilogy with Zimmer, Howard, et al... Anyone think we'll find any easter eggs here? ;)
