If I remember correctly it’s a mish-mash of the two.I do know that piece, it’s very pretty. I’ll check out his other works, thanks for the recommendation. In terms of minimalism I really am into Brian Eno at the moment. Really surprised at this album, I’ve never really heard anything from Max Richter but I really like what he ended up writing for this score. It surprisingly flows well for a stand alone listen. It’s funny that the producers wanted a different approach, I think Richter nailed it.<br><br>Balfe’s contribution is excellent as well, I particularly like that repeating chord progression (which is starting to become one of his trademarks considering how many times he has used it). It’s disappointing that they didn’t include more of his contribution though, since he apparently rewrote the entire score.Lorne said in his Twitter, the first album for His Dark Materials come 3rd November, no date, for the moment, for the second album.Was the producersi haven't understood the fact, that Lorne was involved in this. Can someone explain it for me? Was the director not satisfied with Richters music? Was the deadline too near? Zanelli is no James Newton Howard, but he did a fantastic job with writing a large scale fantasy score. I’ll even say that, while I think the first Maleficent is stronger overall, I personally like the action writing better here. Also 2 little things I’ve noticed;<br><br>1. The new theme here sounds fairly similar to the Father/Son tune from KFP3<br>2. 2:20-3:30 sounds like it may have been temped from the finale of Fantastic Beasts. (Or maybe I’m just crazy lol)Great work of Zanelli, if is not as good like JNH's Maleficent, is a tremendous work, with a terrific writing and orchestrations, even the most tender parts are terrific.It’s definitely Balfe. I’ve seen the film for the second time two weeks ago so my memory is kind of hazy but luckily I decided to record the end credits for reference and I think it plays in Balfe’s section / variation of one of his themes played on a solo string instrument. <br><br>I think we got most of Richter cues as it was mainly his release. I feel that Lorne has moved on from this project - he didn’t even mention the release so an extended release of his material seems unlikely to happen :( <br><br>For those interested the credits suite plays as follows: <br><br><br>“A Trip To The Moon” (synth part)<br>“I Put All That Away”<br>Variation on the theme in “Underground Lake” at 0:14<br>Variation on the theme in “Trip To Neptune” 0-1:00<br>“To The Stars”Season 2 premieres in 2 weeks, if he was scoring he would be working on it at the moment. Maybe because I love tender themes.
I suspect that the release was just what they had originally planned, with a couple of bonus tracks thrown in to appease Fox. They likely didn't put too much thought in what they added, since people who have spoken with Lorne said he wasn't aware of the release and was surprised Prayer wasn't on it. I'm just glad anything got released at all after everything that has gone before.<br><br>Regarding that theme you mentioned, is it one that sounded like the personal motif Ethan has in M:I Fallout? Because while I did initially assume that was Balfe too, it seems it was actually Richter. Haven't gotten to hear Lorne's parts yet, so who knows he if he also did a similar thing.It’s not included and I’m very confused. I think there’s a good amount of unused tracks or the way the score was used was so terrible that only few tracks were memorable to me. <br><br>There’s a theme that plays during two tragic moments - I thought it was “Prayer” but it isn’t. I think it’s by Lorne as it’s closer to the direction he took. <br><br>I wish they gave us more Balfe :(I know this is probably the wrong place for it but I'd love if Hnas would one day release a CD of just his demo sketches and suites. I find hearing the original intentions/ideas even when rough really fascinating.11.22.19Yeah lol one way or another... :P

Well, some recordings are circulating among fans. They somehow "leaked" out of the studio.
There's no regular CD of it, only sound files. Some people might burn it on CD and claim it exists. But until a record company actually releases it, you won't find it in stores.

That's a tad surprising. With the exception of POTC 3 and maybe Man of Steel, it seems like most of the suites on a given Zimmer score will be Zimmer himself. Do you have any other examples besides Inception and POTC 3 where Lorne did suites like this?

I really, really love the "Strategy" cue. Terrific to have in the background during writing or studying. That cue and "Mr. Charles"--a travesty they weren't put on the album release.

if you're just listening off the soundtrack album listen to the second half of "paradox"...it's in there...it also plays at the beginning of the movie when it shows the old man saito...and it also plays when saito is lying wounded on the table, and when he throws the grenade down the ventilation shaft in the snowy dream level :P

Lorne Balfe did all the cues, Hans Zimmer did the F Riff suite (Dream Is Collapsing), Mal Dark suite (Old Souls), Time suite (Time), and Mombasa suite (Mombasa), and Lorne Balfe did the Kick It suite (One Simple Idea, albeit extended).

Some cues are just Lorne's music, most cues are Hans and Lorne, and a couple (like Mombasa Chase and Welcome Home, Mr Cobb) are essentially just Hans.

I'll give an example, to show you how tricky it can be...

Blackbeard from POTC 4.

Technically the cue is Matt Margeson... But he just orchestrated / edited / arranged it... It was Hans' original suite (which, btw, was never recorded...) directly used as the cue. So Matt did work & handle it, but the cue remains HZ's music in the end...

You're right, Mombasa Chase is Hans—it's lifted directly out of Hans' Mombasa suite pretty much—but if it is Lorne Balfe, it just means he arranged it for the scene. It doesn't have to mean it was *his* music or that he even did anything considerable to it. But Mombasa Chase may be just Hans for all we know. I'd stick with saying it's Lorne's arrangement for now, personally, but hey.... lol

We can't be missing out on much considering that it's less than two minutes long. It's just another little thing Hybrid decided to add on top of removing the credits. I don't mean to sound rude, but sometimes he can be a selfish little bitch. An action that he might feel will make him the hero or make him special is more likely to make him look like an asshole.

I expect the new track to be something along the lines of the middle part of "Waiting for a Train" from the OST, which can also be found in the Reverie and Sleep Dreams from the Dream App. I wouldn't fret over it too much.

I was watching the movie today and listening to the music on a scene-by-scene basis.....it's amazing how much Lorne Balfe did on this score. It's really good music, too. Does he ever feel disappointed that he isn't properly credited?

Re: the initial post, I have a question here maybe Hybrid can answer....seeing as Lorne Balfe's Kick It theme is used A LOT throughout this movie (I'd call it one of the primary themes), was it Hans who decided he wanted that theme used so much (even though he didn't write it) or did the director like it a lot and want them to use it?

Read this quote from a Lorne Balfe interview to the end, everybody, then tell me: is it really SO shocking that judging by his description of things, he'd end up writing a good deal of the score (he's talking about Inception an Sherlock Holmes below)?

“There’s lots of producers I know where they don’t really do much. They just come in and listen to something and then make one change—turn the cowbell up and then everyone else does the work. It’s totally different with me; it’s really a case of trying to help create a sonic world and figure out the different instruments being used, and also I was doing additional writing on it as well. So it’s trying to help create the sonic world. I might have different ideas and it will be put in. I think if you don’t [sometimes tell Hans his direction is wrong] you don’t create anything interesting, because you might like orange juice and I don’t. Or we could discuss why we actually don’t like it and use a teaspoon of apple juice and we get a mix. If either of us don’t like something, we say it, and that creates a good partnership.”

And bear in mind that unlike, say, TDKR where Lorne was basically just Hans' arranger, he was the producer on this film, which, as the interview quote shows, is a much larger role.

I'm with you on that one Mike. Also though if that is the case. I still think that on this score Lorne (by his own words) is an Additional Music composer. Not a co-Composer he takes the Ideas that Hans already wrote. and either adds to them or says let's change that around a bit.

But I would be interested on the take of what would be the Mw2 score if that is the case Zimmer was more than just a producer and main theme guy. he should actually be on with additional music if not co-Composer on that score.

Does what i say make sense?

Here's the one thing I don't get (don't take this as melodrama—I have no problems with collaboration or anything. I just want opinions). Hans said in some interview once that he likes collaboration because, among other things, it gives the other guys experience, and he said wants people to know "that Lorne Balfe is a good composer", which is part of the reason he always works with him. But wouldn't a better way to get Lorne's name out there be to actually put Lorne's name up there with Hans' on scores where Lorne's work is substantial? Idk, maybe it's not Hans' call, but if he wants Lorne to be known in the composing world, the current way isn't best IMO. Because so many people think that with Inception, all the music you're hearing is Zimmer. And all that does is boost peoples' esteem of Zimmer and keep them in the dark about talents like Lorne Balfe. Most people don't bother looking at more specific credits. ;)

I do see what you are saying Mike. Although with the Inception score Technically Zimmer did write most of it. (aside from the kick it suite. even though that was used most in the film.) The other stuff was written by Zimmer then you have a mix of both for the score. as Lorne said in the interview "Hans would write something and I would add something and we'd decide whether to keep it or throw it away." Although the method to get him in. with the other top people is probably to give him a film he can actually do by himself.
