I was wondering if your team was in need of a Modular Moog technician in the LA area. I have serious credentials, available on request. I do have a much wider range of electronic music equipment expertise as well.
Hi... just hoping you can tell Mr. Zimmer that his Hans have the midas touch.... If possible please let me know what you think of these two amateur compositions... they were made using the sounds available in Pro Tools 10.... pretty authentic if you ask me, but definitely not the real thing... If you have a second please criticize... keep in mind I can't read music and have never been trained... Lastly, I know this is a long shot... Does anyone know how to apply to be an apprentice of Zimmer. To be honest I'd be the guy who gets scones and tea, if it meant I could get even the tiniest bit of tutorage... Again, please remind Mr. Zimmer his talent and eagerness to explore the branches of music and sound has definitely caught my attention and changed my compositions for the better! How so? I was aiming to be critiqued by either followers or colleagues of Mr. Zimmer... I see others post similar threads... If you had time to read and reply, you had time to reference the links I posted... I would appreciate the criticism... if there is some misunderstanding on my end, please help clear it up... not trying to impose.

I'll give an honest critique to a fellow musician. I listened, they're not bad, the second one is kind of nice, the first a bit boring. They sound earnest rather than being the terrible Zimmer clones most people on youtube shit out ("I have some drums and a french horn sample, I'm a composer!")
You mention you can't read music/don't have much musical knowledge and to be honest, it is pretty obvious from the structure of your compositions. I don't see why that should be "born in mind", as though a concession should be granted. You don't necessarily *need* theory, no, but the progressions, orchestration and arrangement are very simple and predictable and it doesn't really feel like the music develops. You have some decent basic ideas in there, but you don't explore them or add any depth to them. Anyone half-decent at writing music could've written both those pieces in about an hour without much effort.
Keep going with it though. Hope that's useful.

Thank you so much for the well thought out response. I am humbled and agree with you fully. If you have any suggestions on books or other material that I could turn to for referencing, it'd make my summer. I plan on developing this craft as much as possible... thanks again. Have previewed MoS OST and it's garbage. Thanks Hans for screwing it up! Every piece sounds the same as the last, and the same as the last bunch of Zimmer crap scores. Ostinato strings repeated over and over and over and over again, long brass swells with overblown horn parts, pounding and heavily overused percussion - and nothing, and I mean NOTHING, interesting thematically. They really should have got somebody with some musicality like Giacchino to do this one. You, sir, are a hack.

...and what the HELL is with the cue "This is Madness"??? Oh, it's madness, alright. The preview is a full minute of the same one-bar snare drum rhythm with a bass drum on the downbeat every second bar. Seriously? This is the kind of crap you come up with? Because if all there is to writing a film cue these days is a one-bar snare drum rhythm, well geez man, where do I sign up? I could pump out a couple hundred cues a day. Y'know, I really used to look forward to new movies as much for the score as the movie itself if not more so in many cases. You have ruined that for me for many recent films. Now I find myself knowing that as soon as I see "Music by Hans Zimmer" there will be nothing to enjoy as far as the score is concerned.

Some people adore Giacchino because he's kind of the reincarnation of John Williams' old fashioned style. But i tend to agree with you Macejko.

Lol, right Macejko...I mean, if you don't enjoy musical and well-developed thematic material, varied and balanced instrumentation, appropriate use of percussion (as opposed to the crutch Zimmer uses it as) and actual musicality, and instead can only deal with the same boring repeated ostinato garbage over and over again, I can see how you might prefer Zimmer over Giacchino.

I've heard enough to know it's exactly the same kind of monotonous, trite, boring crap as he came up with for TDK. Again...ostinato strings, brass swells, pounding and overused percussion, no themes whatsoever and way too repetitive. Zimmer's music is background noise - more akin to sound effects than music. It's an aside. An afterthought. A backdrop. A shadow. A score should be so much more than this IMHO. His do nothing for me. They don't speak to me at all. Don't communicate anything. It's canned and boring, soulless and dry. If MoS is a great movie, it will be in spite of the soundtrack.

Jim, i guess it's only a matter of taste. I love the samples and i usually love Zimmer's scores. I think they are powerful, majestic and highly emotional. His music really speaks to me.

Talking about TDK's soundtrack do you wanna refer to the Joker theme?
background noise? well that is, sometimes, quite enough to make a huge soundtrack. I don't consider Reznor's Social Network soundtrack as a great, outstanding. To me it was just background noise yet it seems that a lot of people actually loved it.
and to be honest, to say he hasn't write anything good or great for a movie for a long time you really haven't listen to one of his last complete recording sessions.

Guitwo, yes the Joker theme is disturbing and noisy, but that is exactly how a mad man(chaotic and anarchic) such as Joker should sound like. And speak of TR's Social Network, I admit it's not enjoyable but again it's the only type of music to fit the movie and I believe that's the reason they get an Oscar.

Say what you want in defense of Zimmer, but I do like Michael Giacchino--not because he sounds like Williams, but simply because he's a good composer.

Dear Mr. Zimmer,
My name is Karolina Krügler. I have been studying art education on the Technical University of Dresden in Germany. Finally I will be an art-teacher in school. For my master degree I have to create an artwork of my choice. I decided to shoot a short film (about 5 minutes) about the city of Dresden. Therefore, I would like to use Hans Zimmer’s song “Time” of the film “Inception”. I bought the music-cd of the film. I think I need the legal agreement of Hans Zimmer for using his composition. In Germany it is called the “Herstellungsrecht/ Synchronisationsrecht”. My artwork (film+music) will be shown for 5 days in a gallery (Festspielhaus Hellerau) together with other artworks of eleven classmates. My artwork won’t be shown for commercial purpose (non-commercial)! It is an exhibition with free entrance for the visitors, and only with the intention to show my Master thesis (the artwork) mainly to the members of the university. After the exhibition the artwork will be used only private. I loaded my artwork up on Youtube, but on a locked up site, so nobody can see the Youtube-video without having the password (I had to minimize the quality of the film for uploading).
I would be very glad, if Hans Zimmer could possibly watch my video work and it would be wonderful, if he would permit me using his song for my artwork!

I think that asking Hans Zimmer doesn't make any difference. HZ is not the owner of the rights of his music, but the studio does (Warner Bros. in this case). I think you need to contact the german company that is in charge of music rights licensing : www.gema.de
As your exhibition has free entrance that's possible you won't have to pay anything, but contact Gema and make sure of this first.

I noticed a lot of composers don't have their own webpages. I am a MFA student in composing. As such, big companies such as DreamWorks and Universal don't necessarily offer internships in this field. Do composers ever offer internships or apprenticeships?

Do any of you have direct contact with Mr. Zimmer?
I need to know if there's a possibility that if I were to offer my left arm as a means of trade - whereupon receiving the arm, in pristine condition, of course, Mr. Zimmer would have the arm surgically grafted to his chest (or a more conveniently located area; one that would aid him in his compositions) - in hopes that I might be able to visit his amazing-looking (I'm sure it's amazing, but I've only ever seen it in photographs and videos) studio?
I don't eat much. I don't take up much space. Furthermore, and probably best of all, I would be generously quiet. The amount of medications that I would be on after such a traumatic, elective-surgery would see to that. Lastly, in such a heavily sedated state, I may agree to a full cavity search to reassure everyone involved that I do not have any recording devices - this should clear me of any intent with malicious motive.
Please let me know.
PS: If Mr. Zimmer is not interested in my arm I may be willing to offer my foot, but the terms may need to be renegotiated.
Mr. Hans admiring your work, I can not agree with the music at the beginning of the movie "Batman Begins," when Batman goes to prison and goes to the mountains. On mine, humble opinion, there must be more simple sound scheme.
