An excellent musical achievement !
This compilation is, in a certain way, a better achiever than the nonetheless mythical "Wings Of A Film", directed by Hans ZIMMER himself. A real accomplishment in its programming, offering a comprehensive survey of the composer's career, from RAIN MAN to THE DA VINCI CODE, via GREEN CARD & THE LAST SAMURAI.
So, this CD benefits from the fact that it is released seven years after the famous Belgium Concert. But not only so, the programation dares to tackle pieces still "unreleased" in an official version, such as THELMA & LOUISE & DAYS OF THUNDER.
Maybe if we can find "a weak point" of the "Wings of a film" CD was to endeavour to make all selected tracks orchestral for the concert whereas the Silva Screen compilation tries to keep this particular synthetic sound (performed by Gareth WILLIAMS) wich made the "Zimmer sound" famous and whose sheer eradication from the Ghent concert in 2000 could be at times rather damaging (but interesting at the same time). Even if the musical venture is a little less important here, it must be admitted that its deserve is to avoid disconcerting its audience in some pieces. The few liberties that the arrangers have allowed themselves are much more enjoyable, in so far as the key idea was to keep as faithful as possible to the original. As to the pure orchestral adaptations, one can't but be enthousiastic about the way they reflect the original one.
A lesser failure than in the Ghent live concert, CRIMSON TIDE seems nevertheless difficult to be performed in all its intensity by an orchestra : the arrangers' resourcefulness was to endow RAIN MAN with an interesting development.
An excellent opportunity to discover ZIMMER for those who still don't know his scores, moreover in orchestro/synthetical arrangements which will certainly arouse his fans' curiosity. Finally, a legal opportunity to listen to pieces still unreleased on CD.
In a nutshell, a wonderful performance from which the Lion King and The Prince Of Egypt are excluded, to have a first comprehensive approach of the composer's work.

Dear Hans,
your music make feel me better, i cannot describe it with words. I think many people feel like me. That means the "music" exists already in all fantastic forms in every head (almost every i think). But it is the great art to focus it in its perfect form. You are one of the few man on earth, who is able to give that wonderful present to us.

let me just say i am a 15 year old rock musician and hans has changed the way i look at music.
now i want to go to school and hopefully get a masters in music composition.
and my guitar teacher even said (who is about the equivalent to a berklee grad) "my mind cant eve do 1/10th of what hans zimmer's can" and that means something.
hans i strive to be 1/2 as good as you. that would be amazing (unlikely but i can stil try)

Really disappointed with some of the comments I read below. Need to say only one thing. Who thinks that because nowadays we have technology, the art of music composition and arrangement is easy and talentless. I have to say to you are nothing less than stupid, and that you know NOTHING about film scoring. Technology makes things faster and more comfortable in certain ways. BUT, there isn't any PROFESSIONAL software that can compose and produce music for you. When there is a scene, you need to spot it yourself, with you own mind, you need to spend time thinking of ideas, and then you need to be able to put all those idea into real music. Apart from creating a capturing tune, you need to compose for one hell of a big orchestra. Apart from that, in the old days, all we had was just a score paper and a pen, nowadays there are so many things and combinations, and so many thing you need to learn, that sometimes you do know from where to start. Nowadays you need to keep yourself updated every single minute, because what you have learned yesterday, will be obsolete by tomorrow. If someone out there found a music "creation" software in a cereal box for FREE, and thinks that by dragging and dropping loops on the time line is the way Mr Zimmer composes his music, and therefor its so easy. Damn you're so FU..... wrong. I hope you feel my point. "ANNIE". HANS ZIMMER IS THE EVOLUTION OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC WITH ORCHESTRAL MUSIC AND HE HAS COMPOSED MOST OF BEST EVER FILM SCORES THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN!!!

2007/09/25 - Per
The live performances from Zimmer is perhaps closer to the original in 'style' (sorry, best word I could come up with to describe it) compared to these re-recordings, but I still think they are far away from the originals regarding the 'power' in the music... I'm again particularely thinking of scores like for instance Crimson Tide...

Annie: You really gonna make me puke. I hope John Room will never read your message.
2007/09/24 - Annie
ZImmer your music it's all and all ONE theme. It is Boring and only youw hi-tech equipement stands-out. Without it you are a total zero. It is obvious that you don't know anything about music, but keep in mind. SYNTHESIZERS & COMPUTERS are not substitute of the real TALENT.
