Zone 2 - 1 ou 2 DVDs Documentory on the score : 8'30" (all editions)
And its with this DVD release that we close a great chapter in our lives as score addicts. Almost a year to the day, we met Hns Zimmer at Cannes for the projection of the movie (not in competition). A score which means much more to our team than the mere musical support it provides to this animated movie, which boasts extraordinary animation techniques, but whose scenario is clearly intended for children.
The bonus did however disappointment us. We expected several score bonus, especially since it was actually played live during the Cannes Festival !! CAnal + managed to make a 25 minutes documentary, it was natural to think Dreamworks could do as well if not better. Even Jeffry KATZENBERG insisted in underlining the important role the score had in the movie. But no, we shall try to remain content with the 8'30" covering the collaboration betweek ZImmer and Adams.
We start with two minutes and thirty seconds of Zimmer : you can see him working on his computers trying to find the sound which will suit the movie. Unconsciously knowing what he was looking for, a guitar from the Far West, then purely synths, the score becomes a mix of both, with a classical orchestra as the backdrop; beautiful melodies to accompany our delightful ponies across the vast open spaces of America's countryside.
The rest is pretty boring, looking more like a self promotion for Brian Adams, who insists on explaining his inspiration for his work, whereas Zimmer actually managed to show us his intellectual process and his gradual progression to the final score.
Beautiful pictures, lots of talking by Zimmer, but nowhere near the quality and quantity we've come to expect after 'Black Hawk Down' and 'Gladiator'. A missed opportunity.....
