The Lion King
2 versions exist : the classic 2 DVDs, and the "Collector gift" edition which includes a booklet and some stills from the movie. The DVD content is strictly identical.
Thankfully there are no less than 7 different bonus about the score :
1 - Inspiration (3'50)
How the score and soundtrack came to life. Essentially revolves around the producer and Elton John.
2 - Historical composition (3'15)
Elton John's contribution to the movie
3 - Musical flavour (4'30)
Here is the most interesting part for score enthusiasts.
Hans Zimmer explains his role in the composition, his vision, his unused ideas, how he scores, etc..
4 - Orchestral Emotion (3'00)
Hans Zimmer talks about the importance of themes and melodies in a children's animated feature.
5 - African influence (3'50)
This provides critical information to understanding the ethnic undertones of this composition. The principal composers (Hans Zimmer, Lebo M, mark Mancina, ...) explain their collaboration, how they complement each other and the african influence on this score.
6 - A suite of sounds
this section explains the birth and production of the CD "Rhythm of the pride lands'", with Lebo M and Mark Mancina's contributions.
7 - And so it all ends
Epilogue with Elton John, Tim Rice and Hans Zimmer
We can only be pleased with these 25 minutes dedicated to the Lion King score. Please don't forget than on top of this there is a documentary on the Broadway production of the movie (with a Mark Mancina interview) and a picture gallery of all the different CD covers worldwide (for collectors).
Finally, you can enjoy 3 video clips of Elton John and Lebo M. : "Can you feel the love tonight ?", "Hakuna Matata" and "Circle of Life".
