Book review: the Reel World -- Scoring for Pictures by Jeff Rona

In this book, Jeff gives an insiders' view on the composing world, which gives mere morals a more detailed insight into the ins and outs of scoring a movie. The book highlights the subject from various angles: The gear, the social side, orchestrating, and even a part about how to build a career (hint: make sure you have a backup plan and be ready to work long hours). The style of the book is pretty light, which makes it very readable- yet at the same time, where needed it goes deep enough to actually be of use to learn from it, for whom is willing to actively use the book by the side of a project or exercise, instead of just reading it on the couch.

What it doesn't do is teach you how to be a good composer, it assumes you've already more or less got that side covered. But it does give some tips that will definitely help aspiring picture scorers prevent common mistakes.

Audio samples of the material discussed are available online, and they are very helpful to help illustrate the topic being discussed.

Downsides of the book are that by now it is getting slightly dated, especially in the technical section; by now, hardware samplers are more and more being replaced by software solutions, and digital video editing is starting to take off.

To Europeans, different standards may apply here and there - for example, SMPTE code might not be the most common way to synchronize audio and video, although many of the same principles will apply.

All in all, I think this book is well worth owning if you are considering getting into the picfture scoring business.
